A Hampshire marine electronics firm is looking forward to increased production and an enhanced working environment - thanks to a £7,500 re-fit on the production line by Romsey's Storage Advisory Centre (SAC), part of Spaceway South. Brookes and Gatehouse, who manufacture intricate marine navigation components at their base in Romsey, called in SAC to install a new workbench solution in the area where products are glued, potted and rigorously tested. Senior Production Engineer Mike O'Brien says he was very pleased with the result. "SAC has transformed what was a dingy, pokey area - it has been completely re-equipped with workbenches, flooring, bench-mounted lighting and a proper extraction unit - it has radically changed the whole area. " Most of our components - like sensors for boat hulls - are glued or mounted into containers in this part of the production line. The production cell has been made five times bigger - we can now have up to 10 people working in it, compared to just two or three before. We have properly configured electrics instead of leads everywhere and each workstation is fully lit. And it has produced a proper co-ordinated area where we can do water testing of products. The area has also been re-racked so all the glues and chemicals are centrally located. SAC have made a significant impact." Mr O'Brien said the re-fit had come at a perfect time with their busiest period of the year about to start in October. "It is definitely a good investment and will increase productivity over the winter and spring period." SAC worked closely on the project with Kind UK Ltd, a supplier to their direct sales storage catalogue. Revamps of five further cells on the production line are also likely to get the SAC treatment in the future, said Mr. O'Brien.
