NEW MACHINERY NEEDS EXTRA SPACE

A mezzanine floor from Romsey based Spaceway provided a space saving solution for Solent Mould Tools, when the company decided to invest in new machinery at their Waterlooville premises.

One of only a few companies in the UK to boast the large scale production capabilities of an injection mould machine, Solent Mould Tools are now looking forward to big things. First, they had to surmount a big space problem - with the new machine taking up a 5m by 12m area of the factory, extra space had to be created to cater for its arrival.

"Solent Mould Tools are really going places," says Spaceway's Malcolm Plum, "but this can often create initial problems such as finding space for new equipment. With a mezzanine floor, they were able to expand without having to move."

A 76m sq mezzanine floor created the much-needed space, with the tool making and fitting department moved upstairs. And thanks to a lift installed by Independent Access, equipment and tools can be taken up and down according to requirement.

Mick Lloyd, Factory Buyer of Solent Mould Tools explains: "There is a sizeable market for large rubber mould tools but we just didn't have anything big enough to produce them. The new machine was therefore seen as a great investment for us, but we needed to rethink the layout of our warehouse.

"Spaceway came to the rescue with the mezzanine floor - by moving the tool section upstairs we were able to re-position workbenches underneath, freeing up space for the new machine. Spaceway also created an office upstairs for the foreman and had to reroute the lighting and electricity - and all carried out on schedule."
